Description

Smart Traffic Light Control System Based on Traffic Density

The Smart Traffic Light Control System is an intelligent traffic management solution designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve vehicle flow at road intersections. This project uses two traffic lights, representing a two-way road intersection. To detect traffic density, two IR sensors are installed on only one side of the road.

The first IR sensor is placed near the traffic signal, while the second IR sensor is positioned at a greater distance behind the first sensor. Under normal traffic conditions, vehicles are detected only by the first sensor. However, when traffic becomes heavy and the vehicle queue extends far enough to trigger the second IR sensor, the system interprets this as high traffic density on that side.

Once high density is detected, the controller automatically increases priority for that road by switching its traffic light to green, allowing more vehicles to pass and reducing congestion. The opposite side traffic light remains red until the traffic density decreases. This dynamic control mechanism improves traffic flow compared to traditional fixed-time traffic signals.

Working Principle

The system continuously monitors vehicles using two IR sensors on one road.

If only the first IR sensor detects vehicles, traffic is considered normal.

If both IR sensors detect vehicles simultaneously, the system identifies high traffic density.

The controller gives priority to that road by turning its traffic light green.

After a predefined time, the system resumes normal traffic signal operation.

This process repeats continuously to ensure smooth traffic movement.

Application:

Smart Cities, Road Intersections, Traffic Management Systems, Urban Transportation Networks
